Play along, explore the notes, and learn with your ears.

Email gadgetkortina@gmail.com with your device model, operating-system version, Tonalyn version, keyboard model if relevant, and a short description of what happened. Please do not send music recordings, passwords or sensitive personal information.

Start playing

1. Use the on-screen piano or connect a MIDI keyboard. Free Play is available right away for notes and chords, even without a song. Use − / + below the piano to change octaves.
2. Play a song through this device’s speaker or a nearby source. Tap “Start listening” and allow microphone access. Music played only through headphones will not be audible to the microphone.
3. Guess Mode becomes available when the key estimate is ready. Switch it on and try any note or chord. The key stays hidden until you play its home note.

Tap “Try demo” to play an original practice loop with the microphone off. “Go live” switches to microphone listening. “Stop listening” ends either session.

Read the main screen

The top card shows the song and artist when identified. The waveform shows audio activity, and the caption and timer show the current session. Finding the song and estimating its key are separate steps.

In Guess Mode, mint means a note is in the estimated scale. Gold marks the home note and reveals the key name in the center. Discovered notes stay highlighted by default. A note outside the scale flashes coral.

“Your note trail” fills as you guess. The newest note has a ring; dashed circles mark the next positions. In Free Play, the trail stays empty. Open the menu for Song List, Account, Settings and Help. Close a page to return to your practice.

Song List and cloud sync

Song List keeps the songs you identified, how long you actively spent guessing and how many guesses it took to find the key. When a song comes back, Tonalyn shows your earlier result. Your history is saved on this device without an account.

For an optional backup across devices, open Account and create an account or sign in with Google or email. Cloud sync sends song information and practice results; it never sends microphone recordings, acoustic signatures or individual played notes. Signing out keeps local history and stops syncing.

In Account, Update Email sends a confirmation link to the new address after a recent sign-in. Your old address stays active until you confirm. Reset Password sends a secure link to your account email. If a link expires, request a new one. If a network request fails, your songs remain available locally.

Microphone access or listening trouble

On iPad or iPhone, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and enable Tonalyn. On Mac, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone. Return to Tonalyn and start listening again. If another app is using the microphone or an audio device was disconnected, stop the session, check your audio setup, and try again. Free Play and the demo remain available.

Tonalyn listens during an active foreground session. Stop the session to turn its microphone use off; listening also stops when the app enters the background.

Song or key not recognized

Song identification uses Shazam and needs an internet connection. Some recordings, live performances and noisy rooms may not produce a match. Key estimation runs on your device and can work even when the song is not identified.

Move the music source closer, reduce other room noise, and let a fuller musical passage play. Keep your keyboard quieter than the song while the key is being estimated. In Settings, use “Recheck the current key” during a live session if the estimate seems wrong. Feedback follows the estimated scale, not each chord in the recording.

A background song check keeps the current song and discoveries on screen. Finding the same song again does not reset your practice. Tonalyn listens for a gap between tracks before looking for the next song, and updates the card after a different song is identified.

Connect a MIDI keyboard

Compatible USB MIDI devices connect automatically; some keyboards need an adapter, powered hub or their own power supply. For Bluetooth MIDI, open Settings and choose “Connect Bluetooth MIDI.” Bluetooth audio headphones and Bluetooth MIDI keyboards use different connections.

Keyboard sound and appearance

In Settings, choose Tonalyn Piano, Grand Piano, Electric Piano or Organ. “Keyboard volume” adjusts Tonalyn’s notes independently of music from other apps; device volume still controls the overall level. Turn off “Play a piano sound for my notes” if your MIDI keyboard already makes sound and you hear doubled notes.

Note letters are hidden by default. Turn on “Show note names” to see them on the piano. “Keep discovered notes highlighted” controls whether notes you find stay marked for the current song. A new song starts a fresh discovery.

Privacy

Microphone audio is not saved. Key analysis is local, and song identification sends an acoustic signature to Shazam. Read the Tonalyn privacy policy for details.
